# Hyper DTF – Get to Know Your Printer

## Learn the major components of your Hyper Series DTF printer and how they work together.

This article introduces the main components of your Hyper Series DTF printer and explains how they work together to produce a print. Knowing where each part is and what it does makes daily maintenance and troubleshooting much easier.

*This guide covers components common to all Hyper Series DTF printers. Exact layout may vary slightly by model.*

### How the Printer Works – Overview

Every print moves through the same path:

1. **PrintFactory (RIP)** prepares the artwork and sends the job to the hot folder.
2. **PrintEXP** controls the printer and sends the job from hot folder to the mainboard.
3. The **mainboard** drives the carriage and fires the printheads.
4. The **ink system** supplies ink to the printheads: CMYK + White on 5-color systems, or CMYK + ROGB + White on 9-color systems.
5. The **film feed path** moves the DTF film under the printheads.
6. The **capping station** cleans and seals the printheads when the printer is not printing.

---

### 1 – Printheads

Hyper Series printers use **Epson i3200 printheads**. The printheads fire ink onto the film through thousands of microscopic nozzles.

The printheads are the most sensitive part of the printer. Clogged or dried nozzles show up as missing lines in a nozzle check.

### 2 – Carriage, Headboard, Encoder Strip, and Track Train

**Carriage** – holds the printheads and dampers and moves left and right across the film during printing.

**Headboard –** the circuit board that drives the printheads.

**Printhead ribbon cables –** flat data cables that connect each printhead to the headboard. They are fragile, so handle them carefully and keep them fully seated.

**Encoder strip** – a clear plastic strip that runs behind the carriage. The printer reads it to track the exact position of the printheads. A dirty encoder strip can cause misaligned prints, banding, or carriage errors.

**Track train** – the flexible cable chain that guides the ink lines and cables to the moving carriage.

### 3 – Ink System

The ink system stores ink and delivers it to the printheads.

- **Ink tanks** – hold the ink for each color channel. Hyper Series printers come in two configurations: 5-color (CMYK + White) and 9-color (CMYK + ROGB + White).
- **White ink tank mixer** – keeps white pigment from settling inside the tank.
- **White ink circulation motors** – keep white ink moving through the lines so it does not settle. Circulation starts when the printer is powered on.
- **In-line ink filters** – catch particles and sediment before ink reaches the printheads.
- **Dampers** – mounted on the printhead, they regulate ink pressure and remove air before ink enters the printheads.

White ink is heavier than CMYK ink and settles if it is not kept moving. Sediment can clog the filters, dampers, and printheads.

### 4 – Capping Station

The capping station sits at the home position of the carriage and protects the printheads when the printer is idle.

- **Cap tops** – rubber seals that sit against the printheads to keep the nozzles from drying out.
- **Wiper blade** – wipes excess ink from the printhead surface during cleaning.
- **Waste ink pump** – removes ink during cleaning cycles.
- **Wet cap pump** – pushes moisturizer in to the caps for wet capping.
- **Waste ink tubing** – carries waste ink away from the capping station.

### 5 – Film Feed Path

The film feed path moves the DTF film under the printheads at a controlled rate.

- **Film roll** – loaded with the coated print side facing the printheads.
- **Media guides** – keep the film flat at the edges so they don't lift up as the carriage moves left and right.

### 6 – Mainboard and Control Software

**Mainboard** – the printer's control electronics. It receives jobs from PrintEXP and controls the carriage, printheads, and film feed.

Headboard - Connected to the mainboard, printheads, encoder strip reader, and crash sensors.

**PrintEXP** – the printer control software. It runs the printer, cleaning cycles, and nozzle checks.

**PrintFactory** – the RIP and layout software. It prepares artwork, sets print modes, and sends jobs to PrintEXP.
