How to Clean the Wiper Blade (DTF Printer)
Overview
The wiper blade cleans the underside of the print head during maintenance cycles. If the blade becomes saturated with ink buildup, it can cause:
-
Nozzle contamination
-
Ink smearing
-
Cross-color contamination
-
Poor nozzle checks
-
Increased clogging
Regular cleaning is especially important in white ink systems, where ink buildup occurs more quickly.
Important Notes
⚠️ Follow these precautions before cleaning:
-
The printer does not need to be powered off
-
Move the print head carriage to the left maintenance bay
-
Do not bend, twist, or pull on the wiper blade
-
Do not deform the rubber blade
-
Do not scrape aggressively
-
The wiper blade is a consumable part and may need periodic replacement
Tools Required
-
Lint-free wipes or foam swabs
-
Kodak cleaning solution
-
Gloves
-
Flashlight (optional)
Avoid paper towels, as they can shed fibers that contaminate the print head.
Step 1: Move the Print Head to Maintenance Position
-
Use the control panel or maintenance mode
-
Move the head carriage to the left maintenance bay
-
Ensure the wiper blade is fully exposed and accessible
The printer does not need to be powered off.
Step 2: Inspect the Wiper Blade
Check for:
-
Heavy ink buildup
-
Dried white ink
-
Debris stuck along the blade edge
-
Warping or tearing
If the blade appears cracked, curled, hardened, or deformed, it should be replaced rather than cleaned.
Step 3: Clean the Wiper Blade
-
Lightly dampen a lint-free wipe or foam swab with Kodak cleaning solution.
-
Gently wipe the blade from base to tip in one smooth motion.
-
Clean both sides of the blade.
-
Remove all ink buildup, especially thick white ink deposits.
Important:
-
Do not pull on the wiper blade
-
Do not deform the rubber edge
-
Avoid excessive pressure
-
Do not use sharp tools
-
Avoid over-saturating the area
If buildup is heavy:
-
Allow the cleaning solution to sit for 1–2 minutes
-
Wipe gently again to remove loosened ink
Step 4: Final Check
-
Ensure the blade edge is clean and smooth
-
Confirm no debris remains on the blade tip
-
Check the surrounding maintenance area for excess ink buildup
Step 5: Run a Cleaning Cycle
After cleaning:
-
Perform one normal cleaning cycle
-
Run a nozzle check
This ensures the print head is properly wiped and sealed.
Recommended Cleaning Frequency
-
Every 2–3 days for heavy white ink usage
-
Weekly for moderate usage
-
Immediately if you notice smearing, cross-contamination, or nozzle check issues
