How to Clean the Encoder Strip (DTF Printer)

The encoder strip is a clear plastic strip that runs behind the print head carriage. It allows the printer to accurately track the position of the print head during printing. If the encoder strip becomes contaminated with ink mist, dust, or debris, it can cause positioning errors that lead to:

  • Print head crashes

  • Misaligned prints

  • Horizontal banding

  • Carriage errors

  • Inconsistent print positioning

Regular cleaning ensures the printer can accurately read the encoder strip.

Important Notes

⚠️ Follow these precautions before cleaning:

  • Turn off the printer before cleaning the encoder strip

  • Drop maintenance ststionAllow the print head carriage to move freely

  • Do not pull or stretch the encoder strip

  • Do not scratch the strip

  • Never use excessive pressure

  • The encoder strip is delicate and can be easily damaged

Tools Required

  • Lint-free wipes or foam swabs

  • Kodak cleaning solution or approved printer cleaning fluid

  • Gloves

  • Flashlight (optional)

Avoid paper towels or rough cloths, which can scratch the strip or leave fibers.

  • Turn the printer off using the main power switch

  • Wait for the carriage to unlock so it can be moved manually

  • Open the printer cover to access the carriage area

Step 2: Locate the Encoder Strip

The encoder strip is:

  • A thin transparent plastic strip

  • Located behind the print head carriage

  • Running horizontally across the width of the printer

It may have fine positioning marks printed on it.

Step 3: Inspect the Encoder Strip

Check the strip for:

  • Ink mist or overspray

  • Dust buildup

  • Fingerprints

  • Ink droplets or smudges

Any contamination can interfere with the printer’s ability to read the encoder markings.

Step 4: Clean the Encoder Strip

  1. Lightly dampen a lint-free wipe or foam swab with cleaning solution.

  2. Gently hold the encoder strip between the wipe.

  3. Slowly slide the wipe along the strip from one side to the other.

  4. Clean the entire length of the strip.

Important:

  • Do not pull the strip

  • Do not bend or twist the strip

  • Use very light pressure

  • Clean slowly to avoid scratching]

    If buildup is heavy

  • Allow the cleaning solution to sit for 30–60 seconds

  • Gently wipe again

Step 5: Allow the Strip to Dry

  • Let the encoder strip air dry completely

  • Ensure no fibers or residue remain on the strip

Do not move the carriage until the strip is fully dry.

Step 6: Power On and Test

After cleaning:

  • Turn the printer back on

  • Run a test print or nozzle check

  • Confirm the carriage moves smoothly across the rail

Recommended Cleaning Frequency

  • Monthly for normal usage

  • Immediately if print alignment issues appear

  • Immediately after ink mist buildup is visible

Keeping the encoder strip clean helps maintain accurate carriage positioning and consistent print quality.
